In recent years I have been scanning my dads racing photos and sorting them as best we can. Some were marked with dates, others we can tell by what the outfit looked like or who was on the side.
There was an envelope marked 1998 that initially confused me, wondering why my mum had taken photos of a driveway.
But as I turned the photos over I quickly realised it wasn’t just any old driveway, it was Amaroo Park in Sydney.
Mum has taken a series of photos around the track at the last historic bike race meeting that was held there.
This track was a huge part of my childhood. There as a fenced off playground at the bottom of the track where we would hang out, often being let out by someone saying ‘oh, are you wanting to go see dad?’ if we were standing near the gate. If a race went well we would meet dad and Evelyne at the track exit to hitch a ride to the pits. If things didn’t go well we would make our merry way back to the swings.
The stories from people who raced there are great to hear, it truly is a shame that it is no more.
What memories do you have from Amaroo Park? We would love to hear them, drop a comment below.
